Why do Senior Managers and above need drivers for their cars in India?

I was wondering the when the people purchase cars in India, initially they like to drive on their own and enjoy driving. Initially they have smaller cars, and they drive themselves, which is not such a pleasure but when they rise up in the ladder of the management , they buy big, sedan class updated cars, which is pleasure driving, but still they keep drivers and they drive then to their office and back home. I always wonder why?

May be because they grow old and get tired while driving. No i don't think that can be the reply for not driving. Even i have seen people staying near by, also have drivers and they don't drive it themselves.

They feel afraid that they might do accidents, and bang their high end cars with other cars and fall in to embarrassment and payment of dues. If the driver does the same, then they can scold him well, but the driver wont do that deliberately but of course by mistake. So they don't even want to commit that mistake with their car, though in offices they can take any wrong decisions during the meetings with their clients and goof up there.

They wonder, if they don't keep drivers, all their colleagues will feel either his salary is not good, or he is a miser, scrooge or stingy in  his approach. So they keep drivers so that everyone should feel that he is rich and no miser too. Well that can certainly be the reason.

But the main reason i feel is this that the higher management people have to drive many other things in their office. They have to drive the deadlines, the project meetings, the resource management drives, and initiate other important drives in office, which their drivers cannot, so they keep drivers to at least drive them home after such a long and tiresome day of initiating so many drives.

  1. Good observation! there is a saying man makes money and money makes man.Up to some extent its true that mentally tired man could lead to an accident, so one might think that to avoide such mishap had better to hire a driver.
